Last year
we reviewed the Apple Watch gold plating service by
Watchplate.com. We sent them our 38mm Apple Watch Steel and when we got it back it was 18k gold plated!
Many users back then back asked us “Can you gold plate the Apple Watch sport?”. The answer is finally yes: Starting today WatchPlate has announced they can now gold plate the Apple Watch Sport for $399 or “Make my Sport version shiny” which means they can turn your Sport to look like Steel for $149.

We spoke to WatchPlate who told us a little bit about the process. They are the first ones in the industry to be able to offer Apple Watch Sport gold plating with confidence to the public. The reason is that the Sport model is coated with PVD. Since PVD is meant to protect the watch from scratches and dents, it’s also extremely difficult to remove. For many months, the team at WatchPlate worked to find a solution around this.

After testing their process on numerous watches with success, they are now offering the service for customers to buy. There’s a couple things you need to keep in mind if you decide to do this. For example the plating process removes the PVD coating on the watch, therefore the serial number on the back will also be removed. It also voids the warranty on your Apple Watch.

We were told the Sport watch weighs the same after the plating, since the “Steel finish” simply removes the PVD and gives your watch a deep shine, while the gold plating is the same process plus a thin layer of 18k applied on top. If you’re tired of the same look and feel of your watch and looking to give that old Sport a fresh new look—this might be a nice option for you.
