Smartwatches have been getting the “jewelry” treatment for the last several months, but smart fitness bands are lagging behind in that department. Fitness bands, by default, are designed merely for physical activity, distance tracking, calorie counting, and so on – so few fitness band manufacturers have consumed themselves with designing fitness bands as jewelry wrist wearables.
Fitbit has entered the race with its Fitbit Alta, and Korean giant Samsung has now joined the fray with a new smart fitness band called the Samsung Charm. The name “Charm” is a basic name that many will identify with jewelry (hence, “charm bracelet”), and it is a Bluetooth device that connects to your Galaxy smartphone (Samsung says the Charm will connect to your “Samsung smartphone” but doesn’t specify if this refers to the latest smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, or older smartphones such as the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge). Samsung places the Charm in the same category of accessories for the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, so we know for certain that you can use the Samsung Charm with the latest smartphones.
The device uses LED notifications to alert you as to when you receive a phone call, text message, email, and so on. The Samsung Charm has a 17mAh battery, but the company says that you can expect 18 days of battery life if the Samsung Charm is in standby mode.
The Charm tracks your health information via Samsung’s Health app, and syncs your fitness data with your smartphone. Rose Quartz, Gold, and Black are your color selections for the Charm.
Samsung hasn’t yet placed a price on the device, but we can see that jewelry fitness bands are starting to become the “Charm” (pun intended) for many consumers who now want to merge fashion and fitness in a whole new way.
