Smartwatches can provide notifications, the time, and even news notifications like a boss, but one rarely thinks of games when thinking about them. Phones are better equipped to handle games, many believe, because they have larger screens and prove easier on the eyes than the tiny displays found on smartwatches (less than 2-inch display). Well, the role-playing game (RPG) Cosmos Rings, created by Square Enix, is coming to the Apple Watch (it was pulled from the App Store on iOS a month ago). Perhaps Apple allowed the game to be pulled to make this an Apple Watch exclusive.
Square Enix confirmed the game is on the way on its website with the words "Coming Soon," reminding us that, though the game is on its way, we still don't know the precise arrival time. The game will use the Apple Watch pedometer to help players enjoy the game action. The goal is to "bring back the Goddess of Time" while "face[ing] the many human emotions from the Interval of Time." The user plays the main character in this game. Cosmos Rings is a spinoff of Square Enix's Chaos Rings series.
Games such as Runeblade on the Apple Watch remind us that some developers are looking to make the watch as independent as it can possibly become. Rumors suggest that Apple will bring cellular connectivity to the Apple Watch 2, but even the first-generation Apple Watch now has some standalone apps due to Apple's standalone requirement in WatchOS 2.0.
