We've seen the Google smartwatches that rumors have said would arrive after the 2016 Nexus (umm, I mean, Pixel) announcement, and we've seen a tell-all photo, but little has surfaced since then. We have seen Google ditch the Nexus brand on all future products and commit to the Pixel moniker for its 2016 smartphones, and we're assuming that the Pixel moniker will come to a new pair of Android Wear smartwatches that are rumored to have arrived after the Pixel and Pixel XL announcement.
Well, a new leak from Evan Blass, a VentureBeat reporter also going by the Twitter name @evleaks, says that the new Pixel smartwatches "will be released with Android Wear 2.0 in Q1 2017," the leakster wrote some days ago. Blass also leaked a photo of the upcoming smartwatches, though he didn't call them "Pixel" (just "Google's two smartwatches").
The label is interesting, indeed. Does this mean that Google will name the smartwatches something other than Pixel? This is likely not the case, but it means, too, that Blass doesn't know the name of the smartwatches just yet. We've been hearing, too, that there was a potential Huawei Nexus tablet in the works, but we've since learned that Google has ditched all Nexus projects (so we can safely assume that these two Google smartwatches will be named "Pixel").
We know that these two new smartwatches have been named "Angelfish" and "Swordfish," that both will be circular, and that one will have more buttons than the other, alongside of a larger display and thicker wristband. We assume, too, that these two upcoming Pixel smartwatches will also have different price tags, though details are scarce at this moment.
These two new Pixel smartwatches and the fact they're soon to land with Android Wear 2.0 in January 2017 may explain in some additional detail why Google decided to delay the launch of Android Wear 2.0 until Q1 2017. Google delayed the launch of Android Wear 2.0 due to quality requirements, bugs that need squashing, and user problems that couldn't be fixed immediately.
Google has already released its 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL and many expected the same announcement to include smartwatches. We don't know if HTC will manufacture the Pixel smartwatches (as it has the Pixel phones), but you can be sure that, in the same fashion, these upcoming smartwatches will bear a "G" on the back.
