Remember the OneWatch? It was OnePlus's take on the smartwatch world that, from the public leaks, appeared to be more in line with other circular-shaped smartwatches released onto the market. Well, OnePlus figured the timing wasn't right in 2015, but its co-founder, Carl Pei, is getting a little sentimental about the OneWatch these days. Recently, Pei leaked more drawings of the OnePlus OneWatch.
From Twitter, Pei wrote the statement, "What could have been but never will be. Sketches circa 2015. #throwback," with a large diagram of sketches that show components such as the recharge port, a "press to release bottom cap" (what seems to be some sort of instructions about implementation and design), along with the same band, display, and frame that we've seen in the earlier OneWatch sketches. The OnePlus OneWatch sketches can be seen below.
Carl Pei says that this watch will never be, but it could just arrive one of these days. OnePlus decided that NFC wasn't necessary for the OnePlus 2, leaving many customers upset that a "2016 flagship killer" didn't have NFC for Android Pay. It could be the case that OnePlus is wrong about waiting to release a OneWatch. Some have said that it's just too early in the smartwatch game to release the OnePlus OneWatch, but there's never really a right time to do so. At some point, you have to release the device, whether or not everyone loves it. Tech diehards, us here at Smartwatch.me included, wouldn't mind seeing the OnePlus OneWatch up-close and wearing one, but we realize that not all the consumer market agrees.
When all is said and done, consumers will either buy smartwatches or not. And there will always be consumers who have little interest in them, regardless of timing. Fortunately, Xiaomi doesn't seem to care about timing, with the company having just created its own smartwatch category with plans to launch its own wrist wearable this September.
What do you think? Do you want to see a OnePlus OneWatch arrive on the market? Would you buy the OnePlus OneWatch over current smartwatch offerings, or is there one smartwatch that has your heart and mind (give us the name of it)?
