Huawei has been one of the Android Wear OEMs having some measure of success, once Motorola's round Moto 360 became the standard for smartwatch design (smartwatches of the future would have to be circular, many said), but there comes a time when old smartwatches must leave the nest. Huawei has not only had a men's watch (called the Huawei Watch) on Android Wear, but crafted ladies smartwatch collections, the Huawei Watch Elegant and Huawei Watch Jewel, for Android Wear as well. Despite Huawei's insistence on making something for the ladies, I have my objections to "men's" and "women's" watches, one being that few people are already buying smartwatches and that, of those few buying them, 99% of all buyers out there are masculine.
Well, it appears as though the Huawei (Men's) Watch and Watch Elegant and Watch Jewel have had their time in the sun and must now retire. Google has removed all three smartwatch collections belonging to the Chinese OEM from the Play Store. With the removal of these lineups (and Google making room for new Android Wear smartwatches), one would easily think that Huawei has upgrades to the first-generation smartwatches in the works. Unfortunately, though, that may not be the case because Huawei is already considering another platform for its wearables (Tizen seems likely) and doesn't seem to have any interest to return to Android Wear.
We don't know what will happen to Huawei smartwatches going forward, of if there'll even be a second-generation Huawei smartwatch that makes it to the Google Store, so we'll have to wait and see. For those who want to get the Huawei Watch, there are some significant discounts present at Amazon from time to time. The Huawei Watch, the Men's Watch, has been upgraded to Android Marshmallow and has an additional year of warranty for US buyers -- so it's still a hot buy, even now. And a female friend or relative may love either a Huawei Watch Elegant or Watch Jewel for a good Christmas gift.
What do you think? Sad to see these Huawei smartwatches go? Wondering whether Huawei will return with new watches? Found a good discount on a Huawei Android Wear smartwatch? Feel free to let us know.
