I've stated here at Smartwatch.me that smartwatches are a wonderful wrist innovation but that they are limited in capacity and capability when it comes to smartphone displays (the one reason why we can't compare iPhones and the Apple Watch just yet), They are to be appreciated for what they offer, even with their limitations, though, in their current state, they won't make you drop your smartphone permanently.
That could be about to change in the next few years, though, if a new smartwatch makes its way to market. The new smartwatch, called Doppio, has dual screens. That's right: the device has two screens, one of which can be placed above, beside, or on the stationary smartwatch display to add information or extend the information on the current screen to a second screen that improves the visual experience for the user.
The Doppio was presented by Dartmouth researchers at the recent CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. "Our proof-of-concept hardware prototype demonstrates how Doppio interactions can be used for notifications, private viewing, task switching, temporary information access, application launching, application modes, input and sharing the top," said Dartmouth Computer Science Assistant Professor Xing-Dong Yang.
Essentially, having two 1.6-inch screens, for example, would create a 3.2-inch screen that would come close if not rival that of the original iPhone. If you had two displays that were both 2 inches across (the size of the Gear S display, for example), you'd have a 4-inch screen that could then do all the things you can do on, say, the iPhone SE or smaller-display smartphones.
Screen size is definitely the major drawback to smartwatches nowadays, and, despite the claim that making apps standalone and bringing 3G connectivity will improve the situation, display size limitations will persist until someone tackles the problem. It's nice to see that someone is tackling the major problem that could open up reception to all other new technologies that are putting smartwatches on the rise in general growth. You can watch the Doppio smartwatch video below after viewing some screenshots that freeze the moment.
What do you think of the Doppio smartwatch? Could you see some potential uses for a dual-screen smartwatch? Would you be willing to use one long-term?
