The ASUS ZenWatch 3 has appeared at the FCC, with a stainless steel body and round casing, but as always, it's the photos that make it real. Well, in just a day after the ZenWatch 3 leaks, we now get a good look at just what the third-gen. ASUS Android Wear smartwatch will look like.
The new ZenWatch 3 images show a circular smartwatch that comes with a wall adapter and USB cable (we wouldn't expect any different for a smartwatch). The ZenWatch 3 itself has been said to look similar to a Moto 360, but, in actuality, the wristband for the device matches that of the Gear S2 Sport rubber wristband more than the Moto 360. If you recall, the Moto 360 has always utilized a premium, Horween leather wristband in some cases, but the wristband on the upcoming ZenWatch 3 seems to counteract the premium stainless steel casing (which seems to be so formal that it merits anything but a rubber wristband look). Of course, other images seem to hint that the wristband will be more premium than the Gear S2's rubber wristband, but at a side glance, you could mistake the ZenWatch 3 wristband for a Gear S2 Sport 20mm band.
The ZenWatch 3 image showing a wall adapter and USB cable hint that ASUS is considering a different way of charging its next-gen. smartwatch than it implemented with its first-gen. and second-gen. models. With the first-generation ZenWatch, ASUS implemented a magnetic charging mechanism that can simply wear out over a period of time. With this upcoming charging instrument for the ZenWatch 3, ASUS is considering an improved charging implementation that won't "wear and tear" so quickly. Magnetic charging mechanisms are sophisticated but fleeting, and this is a good move. Of course, we'll keep our eyes open for what else the ZenWatch 3 could bring on this front.
The ZenWatch 3 images, seen below, show just the hardware only. We're 99% confident that the ZenWatch 3 will run Android Wear, but outside of that, there isn't much to tell. The ZenWatch 3 will run Android Wear 2.0, which allows users the ability to customize their watchfaces and notifications so that they can keep tabs on any app on their watch display.
With the ZenWatch 3 having passed through the FCC, and images leaking, we expect the ZenWatch 3 to be announced any day now by Google. We're interested in seeing what other next-generation Android Wear smartwatches are coming down the pipeline by year's end.
